Jase Whiteside Wins the 2018 Student Lighted Design Contest

Seventh grader, Jase Whiteside was the winner of the 2018 Student Lighted Design Contest and had the honor of flipping the switch that lit up Livingston at the Lighting Ceremony on November 20, 2018.

Each year, the City adds more lights and more memories and invites a new round of students from Central Baptist Church’s Em Power Youth Group to submit their drawings for the year’s new addition to the lighted self-standing displays. One lucky student’s design is selected, and the Parks & Rec Department brings the design to life.

Jase’s design is aptly named “Chris the Christmas Turtle” and is complete with a festive Santa hat. Jase said the inspiration for the design came from his beloved pet turtle named Ooptie. When Jase is not designing holiday decorations, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends. Jase said the best gift has ever received was his little brother David who was born just before Christmas a few years ago.

Jase’s turtle can be found on display in the front of the Livingston Municipal Library throughout the holiday season. Designs from previous years are on display at Pedigo Park.
